BETAMOUSE #57 – Non-Disney Travel Apps

This week, we’re talking about our non-disney travel apps (sorry, Android folk!), and how they relate to our Disney trips. We talk about our best time sink apps, work apps on the road, communications and social, and general touring/travel related apps. Probably our least Disney-focused episode so far, but we hope you glean some app / travel-flow ideas from it.

  • Great episode!

Re: Evernote. You actually CAN share notebooks with the free version you just have to set it up from the native computer app (either Mac or PC). If you’re an Evernote user, I highly recommend installing these because they give you so much more functionality.

Re: Group Texting. I may have misunderstood what you’re trying to do here but the native texting app on iPhone does allow everyone to see what other respond to a group text but only if Group Messaging is on. (Settings –> Messages –> Group Messaging)

Re: Maps. Ed (Katie’s husband) introduced me to the free MapQuest app which even gives voice turn-by-turn directions. I never use my navigation system in my car anymore.

    Great Show!

    • Hey Margaret! Great point re: Evernote. Good call with Group Messaging as well! Does this only work with other iPhones? If so, one thing that’s nice with GroupMe is that it’ll work with any phone that has SMS. And thanks for the MapQuest tip!

      • Ooooo…. good question. Not sure if Group Messaging only works with iPhones because I’ve only used it with other iPhone users! Hmmm… should put that to the test.

  • Hi, Betamouse folk! Love the podcast, but am a newcomer to the website….I was hoping to find a list of all the apps you talked about in the most recent show. I listen to the podcast in the car, and couldn’t manage to search apps and drive at the same time :-) . Any chance of putting some in shownotes? Or am a being a clueless newbie (totally possible).

One great iPhone use for travel…that cities with great transportation systems such as NY and DC also have great apps that will let you know where the stations are, when the next train arrives, if there are delays, etc. Some media outlets will also have traffic desks that you can follow on Twitter for alerts.

    Thanks!

  • Would evernote be the best solution for coordinating documents and plans with family for an upcoming trip, or is there another software or website better for that?

I just found you podcast a couple weeks ago & I love it!

    • Either EverNote or Google Docs! Thanks for listening Katie!

    • I would think it would depend on how tech savvy your family is. I would vote for Evernote because of it’s top-notch search functionality and shared notebooks but Google Docs may be more familiar. Does that make sense?

And then there are sites like http://www.triporama.com. I’ve never used them but they’re out there if you do a search on “group trip planning” or something similar.

  • I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you design this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you? Plz respond as I’m looking to design my own blog and would like to know where u got this from. many thanks
