I also like the idea of going back to the original. In my view, I think the older scenes were left alone because of a desire not to screw around too much with something that has Walt's fingerprints on it, rather than because it would have cost too much. And keeping the final scene up to date is a poor choice both because it's an unending exercise in futility, and because the disconnect between the last and penultimate scenes would grow increasingly jarring. The only options would be to update every scene on a regular basis, or restore it to its original glory and maintain it that way.

Katie said something on Episode 14 (I've been listening for a couple of months - started at Episode 1 and this is where I am so far) that caught my attention. She mentioned that the final scene would be better if everyone, though gathered together as a family, was on their own individual mobile devices (phone, laptop, whatever), because that is a more realistic portrayal of how things are today.

At the risk of sounding like a "grumpy old man" (I'm older than you guys, but I'm not that old, and I'm no Luddite - I'm a professional developer and an absolute geek), is tapping away on your phone or laptop, while gathered as a family as portrayed in the final scene, not still considered rude? We've all seen this behavior, but I (and I though everyone else) view it as a foible of the young that they will (hopefully) outgrow, while secretly harboring scorn for the parents that ought to know better than to let them do it. Or at least that's the prevailing opinion among my generation.

But you guys aren't teenagers - and Katie's comment left me with the impression that this is considered normal behavior, and that will eventually be universal - and that that's OK.

Not even sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I thought it an interesting topic.

As a website manager, I really appreciated this episode. Are there other web developer podcasts you listen to or would recommend? It's such a fluid field and it's so hard to keep up with the latest trends and sift through what's good info and what isn't.

As an Android user it is exciting to hear that an organization as large as Disney isn't restricting themselves to one platform! ;-)

A thought after listening to your comments...

If Disney can include FastPasses, deals, and other "bonuses" with this app, do you think maybe it could be linked somehow to if you are a WDW Resort guest vs. an off property guest... an AP and/or DVC member, or a Disney Visa cardholder?

This way they could give tiered bonuses to guests based upon their status.

Something to think about...and we can all hope that my 9yo daughter isn't in college by the time the app is implemented!

Re Potato Head: I know for a fact the sayings are repeated more these days than before because the CMs running Mr. PH (yes, he is in the same rotation as Loading/Unloading and Fastpass) have a secret competition going on to see who can play the "One Potato" song the most times in a rotation

Love the show, just started listening and I'm catching up.

Just found the new Subsonic Radio app in the iTunes Store. It links to their site and is pretty darn sweet! Several different streams to pick from.

First off, I love your podcast and it downloads to my ipod every week. I've been slowly going back and listening to the first 13 or so shows that I missed. I look forward to hearing what's new out there with Disney tech because my husband and I are just as into our tech as into Disney. I head to Disney totally wired, from my phone loaded with travel apps, and the kids' ipods, to my Mac, and the little Acer that we run a webcam off of from our balcony.

However... I had to turn this episode off because you guys were making me feel *SO OLD*! "Amped" entered the dictionary in 1972, "Jazzed" in 1915. Not to mention that there were bookstore chains (Walden, Crown) and fly notes (how you know what's in the book without reading it) 20 years ago too.

Next time you enter that way back machine, please be kind and fact check. It's not just the young Disney kids out there listening to you!

Yah, the MouseWorldRadio app is a good one, I've had it on my iPod touch for a while (and now my iPad as well). Nice and simple, just a single button to start/stop playback (and free too). It's an older app, so I'm sure it's not ios4-savvy.

On the game front, I have Fairies Lite for DD7 and DD5, but they don't play it that much, at least not enough for me to consider buying it. But another Disney app they play more is Disney Cards. It's pretty neat playing Hearts, Go Fish, Crazy 8s, and others, sitting across the table from Minnie or Donald.

Great show guys. Keep up the good work. I have not finished the show yet, I have gotten through Katie's.

I wanted to add that there is a Mouseworldradio app that is free and streams MouseWorld#1 feed. It is awesome.

The other is the LEGO app. My kids love it. It can convert any picture to look like it was made with Legos. The more you tap the picture, the more it changes and makes cool sounds. Enjoy.

I'm in the process of starting a blog, and the biggest issue on my mind right now is whether I should be concerned about using "Disney", "Disneyland", or "Magic Kingdom" in my domain name and blog title. Do you know of any copyright/legal issues I might have if I were to do that? (I know you're not lawyers, I'm just looking for what experiences others have had.)

Thanks!

I have to say fail for online dining. Reason being I attended for the first time the Gospal brunch at the House of Blues this year. Which I recommend to anyone reguardless of beliefs. I tried booking it through online dining. It kept telling me that it was fully booked. I tried resubmitting every few min. for about an hr. still nothing. Since I am a DVC member I just called our 800# and what they told me is that you have to call the HoB directly to reserve your spot. Now they could have just put that on the website to begin with. I called and got the show time I wanted and it was quick and easy. Not sure if they have changed that, but I think I will stick with the human element for now(as the panel of Disney tech geeks gasps at the thought). Love the show. Keep up the good work.

I remember when I worked for FedEx I used to have this guy who would come in every few months and would ship a phone back to Verizon. He told me that he travels around the world for his job and those phones he was sending back worked over seas. His company just paid for the usage. I was wondering if Henry had looked into that or was that discussed? Now this was 5 years ago.

I was wondering if Henry had looked into that or was that discussed? Now this was 5 years ago.

I want to say thank you for this episode. It's what gave me the idea of starting my own blog detailing my personal Disney vacation plans. Even if no one reads it other than my own family and friends, it's still a lot of fun to put together.

Thanks very much for this episode. I tried out the new online reservation system as soon as I got home after listening. I agree that it is a vast improvement over the old system. I plugged in Epcot on July 10th (the first date of my next WDW trip), and it gave me all the restaurants that still had availability. A few seconds later, and I have a confirmed reservation for Le Chefs de France. Awesome.

Just got halfway through the episode #20 and had to leave a comment about multitasking. I have a Palm Pre and if multitasking is what you're after, Palm's WebOS does a very good job of it. Dare I say better than iOS or Droid?....I better not say that with all the iphone people here. Don't want to get flamed on. Insert nervous laughter here.

I've had the Pre for a year now and haven't had any problems with multitasking crashing the device. Memory is definitely an issue with the original Pre when there are a lot of "cards"(applications) open, but doesn't tend to crash the phone. I just have to close some cards. The Pre Plus on AT&T fixed this with additional memory.
Lack of apps (~2,800 now) are still an issue and the hardware is becoming very long in the tooth compared to the new iphone and HTC EVO. Hopefully Palm(soon to be HP or HPalm or whatever) will come up with some new hardware this year, or else they'll have wasted an great OS. I enjoy listening to you guys every week, keep up the good work.

Would be interesting to hear how Henry used technology on his trip to Disneyland Paris. I've yet to travel overseas so maybe would just be interesting to me. Did his phone work? GSM/CDMA? GPS? Roaming? 3G availability? Any useful Apps? Is the wi-fi technology the same. Were a lot of people using smartphones in the park? Did he have to carry a bag full of adapters? I saw a lot of tweets, so he must have had something. Just curious.

In Addendum:

Apple has introduced 7 specific background services for IOS 4 apps that will allow them to continue tasks after a user switches away from them. These include:

- Background audio - Allows your app to play audio continuously.
- Voice over IP - Users can now receive VoIP calls and have conversations while using another app.
- Background location - Navigation apps can now continue to guide users who are using other apps
- Push notifications - Receive alerts from your remote servers even when your app isn't running.
- Local notifications - Your app can now alert users of scheduled events and alarms in the background, no servers required.
- Task finishing - If your app is in mid-task when your customer leaves it, the app can now keep running to finish the task.
- Fast app switching - This will allow users to leave your app and come right back to where they were when they left - no more having to reload the app.

Great show, Team Betamouse!

As a little side note, Disney has had some experience with beta software. Most recently, the World of Cars online game (http://worldofcars.go.com/) is still in beta. I think the POTC online game also came out in beta. I only know of them doing this with online games like this, so I'm not sure if there are any other occurrences.

Just thought you'd like to know!

As if there are places to visit other than Disney, and tech to buy other than Apple...

And yes, I'm going to line up now for iPhone 4.0

Anyone going to try the new Dell Streak running Android? I see it's now been released in the UK. I saw it demoed at the Citrix Synergy last month in San Francisco. Looks quite nice. Interesting that they are selling it more as a 'tablet'. You can get it in the UK with a data only package which is interesting.

Oh, and thanks for picking up the way I say 'Twitter' - LOL!!!

Thanks Jen,
It wasn't that I didn't like Android. I actually really like it. If the HD2 would have been Android instead of WinMo I probably would have upgraded to that. But, being that it was WinMo I was actually going to upgrade to Nexus One and 2.2 this summer, I just couldn't accept T-Mobile's "5 Star Customer Service" anymore. This wasn't our first issue with them. - Nate

Nobody's got a Droid anymore? Sad day! Bring stuck with 1.6 would be a huge drawback, tho.

About tethering... you can already tether your Droid. Install pdanet from the Android market or go to
http://junefabrics.com/android and follow the instructions. No rooting or hacking involved... and it's FAST! It'll work with Bluetooth, too.

I'm looking forward to Froyo mostly for flash.

Hey Ryan!

We try to give as many views as possible but its common since all of us have the products we'd lean the Apple way. We did actually record a show all about Froyo and using its features in the parks last week right after it was announced and it will be released this Thursday. (We are a couple weeks ahead of ourselves). Hope you enjoy that one and hope you keep listening!

We don't think labels are very important, but we're going to keep calling us "tech" focused. 95% percent of our content is non-apple related.

I'm sorry if you don't dig the Apple fanboy/girl stuff we throw in there, but hey, that's just how we roll.

Gotta say, I'm considering not listening to Betamouse anymore due to the Apple slant. I have nothing against Apple and even own a few Apple products, but you really can't call yourself a Disney "Tech" podcast when you talk about primarily Apple stuff. I didn't see you have a live chat during the Google I/O Android announcements, but this will be your second Apple chat (again, I like Apple, I just think tech news should be balanced).

Perhaps you should be the Disney/Apple podcast. I see nothing wrong with that and would probably even keep listening. I just think you're falsely branding your podcast as tech when it's pretty firmly planted in the Apple camp. Just sayin'. :-)

I think that the technology is fantastic. However I don't think I would be queuing to meet one of the living characters. There is just something not quite right. I kinda find it a little bit creepy to be honest.

Your blog doesn't look right in Lynx. Maybe your theme? But other than that, I'm going to say this isnt the first I've seen this. But yes, it's pretty much the way it is and the way it will be. wty1d8

Personally, I love the Living Characters up until the Mickey. He's great, the voice is good, but the whole costume is just not cutting it for me. There is just something that doesn't look quite right with the proportions.

Ah, interesting points!

We could definitely cover this on a future episode.

However, one note: the blogging business is hard. Getting to break-even on hosting / domain fees is hard, even. It's not easy to create a revenue stream from disney content. Best hope is sponsorships, which you may be able to hook up if you have decent enough traffic!

Thanks for this episode! I started a Disney blog last year and got through one or two entries before I started to panic that it was a waste of time. I don't really believe it, but I didn't know how to get over that creative hump. I have a lot of notes from where I brainstormed -- I need to go back to those again.

So you've prodded me to go back to my blog. I'll post a couple more entries then report back with my address.

Also, a topic I was hoping you'd cover is making money with your blog. Unless none of you do? :) There's a lot of info online, but it's hard to tell what's garbage and what isn't. Thoughts?

I'm still fairly new at bloggging, and I just wanted to say I enjoyed this episode. I'm currently a freeloader on Wordpress.com, mainly because I'm a cheapskate and don't see the point in paying when I don't have too, and it's just a hobby/side interest (for now). I figure until it starts making money for me, or I'm using it to make money, then why invest in a domain name?

I wanted to let you know about a tool I found that I use for writing/posting my blog entries. It's Windows Live Writer from Microsoft. They advertise that it will publish to Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad and others, and of course theirs as well. It does an okay job of editing and has a few decent plug-ins too. I've been using it for a couple months now and like it.

I like the idea of going back to the orginal Carosel. I would change the ending to refer people over to inoventions to see what the future may hold for us and link back at inoventions to see where we came from. Try to make the two shows work with each other's strengths.

Listening too your latest podcast about twitter and I'm curious what your thoughts are about yoono? I have been using it for a few months to monitor my twitter/facebook feeds. Didn't hear this Firefox plug-in mentioned.

BTW - great podcast. Keep up the good work.
